  1. Water Harvesting and Rural Development

During Medical Camp organized by us in tribal villages in various districts of West Bengal it was noticed that most of the adult was underweight. There weight was in alarming range of 30-38 Kg for adult aged between 30 to 60 Years. So, a meeting was held with village team to ascertain socio-economic condition of villages and what steps should be taken by villagers and what help can be provided by us to uplift the villages.

It was found that most of the villagers have lands 1 to 10 Bigha scattered into multiple small plots. And only part (less then 50%) of the land is cultivated in rainy season.

It was unanimously agreed upon that unavailability of water after rainy season is the major cause of problems. In absence of water only one crop can be harvested and that to on part of the land owned by villagers. Many times irregular and unpredictable rain even hampers this crop also. This provide them with food only for 3-6 months. After that they have to work as labour in scarcely available labour market. Most of the families get job for avg of 50-100 days during the year. And this provides them with a total annual income of only 3000/- to 8000/- to feed the family for the year. Any other essential facilities such as cloths, house etc are considered luxury and and could not be accommodated in annual plan. It was also established that if rain water is retained in the area, many of the families will be get 2nd crop and there food security will improve. Fishing will be an added advantage. This will also improve ground water situation. It was ascertained that villagers will prepare water reservoir in part of their land and plant trees around it to harvest water and we from Kolkata will provide them with guidance and assistance . Three villagers took the charge of talking to other villagers and start the project.

And, now, it is time for all of us to activate a Kolkata level team and mobilize resources and finances for Water Harvesting and Village Development for the entire state.

The reservoirs will be 50 ft x 50 ft at the top level and 30 ft x 30 ft at bottom with a depth of 15 ft. with a capacity of about 25000 CFT. 10 ft strip around reservoirs will be planted with fruit and vegetable plants

Each reservoir will provide irrigation / water for
Assured and predictable water supply for first crop
Emergency Coverage during erratic rainy season
2nd crop for 5-10 Bigha land
    Fishing
    Year round water for villagers.
    Ground water recharging

Excavated soil will be used for correcting slope, embankments etc.
Where ever required villager will prepare bricks from excavated soil and use for lining of the reservoirs
We need you to join us in Water Harvesting movement
Water Harvesting in Tribal Villages to uplift them

I first Phase 20 nos of 25000 CFT reservoirs to be prepared.
Estimated cost of each reservoir will be about Rs. Rs. 25000/-
Volunteers required to visit villages, prepare villagers teams, motivate them, Plan and supervise work
