EDUCATION CAMP

Through its latest initiative - The Education Camp, PKA gives vanvasi children a chance to interact with us, young urban boys and girls. We squeeze out time from our busy schedule and have a vision – to motivate these children, to interact with them and to ensure that they complete school. Yes in the education camp we youngsters form groups along with some adult volunteers and go to PKA’s select hostels where we spend a couple of days interacting with the children. We solve their problems in English grammar, comprehension and mathematics. The result is – these children feel cared for, motivated to complete their school. This also goes a long way in fostering the relations between vanvasi and urban Indians. On the other hand – we urban youngsters get a chance to experience rural life, a chance to actually feel the condition of the rural people and lastly a chance to make a change in the society!!! This is The Education Camp.

Functioning of Purvanchal Kalyan Ashram

Kalyan Ashram has a two - part working system - Urban part and the actual Field part.

Field working : This refers to actual work areas i.e. Kalyan Ashram's various projects in vanvasi areas spread out all over India. Kalyan Ashram, through projects like Education, Health Care, Sports, Cultural and Economic Development aims to bring about an overall upliftment in the vanvasi society. These projects are run by 'Poorn-Kaleen Karyakartas' i.e. those volunteers who have devoted their life for Kalyan Ashram (about 1200, all over India) or local Vanvasi part time karyakartas. The projects utilise the resources like funds, articles, materials and medicines which are collected in cities.

Urban working : In cities Kalyan Ashram is the name given to a 'vichaardhara' or cultural and intellectual revolution. Kalyan Ashram follows a two pronged approach. One is collection of funds, materials, medicines from regular donors and projects like 'Makar Sakranti Shivir', 'Sewa-Patra Yojana', 'Vidyalay Sampark' and 'Deepak Nirmaan Yojana'. The proceeds from these are then sent to vanvasi areas where Kalyan Ashram's projects are running. The second approach is spreading awareness among the urbans about the vanvasi, their culture and needs.
Events like 'Vanyatra / Vanjeevan', 'Education / Medical Camps', 'Ram-Navmi Utsav', 'Vaarshik Utsav' are organised which fulfill the above motive and create a sense of duty and responsibility towards the vanvasi.

Each city is divided geographically, each division having a 'Purush Samiti' and 'Mahila Samiti'. The volunteers of each 'Samiti' meets regularly to discuss various future plans, agendas and programs. Once in a month the Karyakartas of all the 'Samitis' meet called the 'Mahanagar Baithak'. 'Akhil Bhartiya Sammelans' are organised where karyakartas numbering almost 2500 from different Indian cities assemble.

Youth Wing : The Karyakartas in Kolkata formed a Youth Wing in January, 2009 to stimulate young minds and inspire them to work for this cause. 'Youth Awareness Program', 'Education / Medical Camp' are some activities organised by the youth wing. Similar Youth Wings are also functioning in other Indian cities.

The details of the above mentioned projects, programs and functions are given in the following link-

Volunteer Opportunities

To be a part of Purvanchal Kalyan Ashram you need nothing but 'sevabhaav' i.e. a passion, commitment and dedication towards this cause. We don't believe in registrations, admissions, compulsions etc. we work as per our time, orientation and convenience. There are no rules or fixed procedures to be followed. Anyone who feels for the vanvasis and wants to do something for them is a part of kalyan ashram.

Moreover, at Kalyan Ashram, we don't believe in the concept of charity. We believe and firmly that by serving the vanvasi we are fulfilling our own duty. Unlike most social organisations we don't distribute money or food among the vanvasi, we distribute education, motivation, organisation and provide them with vocational training to enable them to support themselves.

CITY LEVEL :

@ Samiti level meetings : Regular meetings are conducted for the youth team as well as the senior karyakartas to discuss about future programs, activities and agendas.Attending these meetings is an ideal way to become a part of kalyan Ashram.

All major cities of India have samitis. Each city is further divided into various 'samitis' like in Kolkata -Salt Lake samiti, Joramandir samiti, Barabazar samiti etc. which have regular meetings. Once in a month 'Mahanagar' level meeting is organised in which volunteers from all samitis in the city come.
Youth meetings are conducted every alternate sunday at kalyan Bhavan.

@ Deepak Nirman Yojana : If one has a flair in artwork or painting then he can paint our 'deepaks' which are sold before diwali , the proceeds of which are remitted to the tribal areas. This is Kalyan Ashram's 'Deepak Nirman Yojana'.

@ Makar Sakranti Shivir : Rajasthanis have a custom of donating 14 items of daily use on 'Makar Sakranti' in january. Collection Camps/'shivirs' are organised all over Kolkata to collect these articles which are sent to tribal areas like Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh etc. In january, 2009 nearly 36 such 'shivirs' were held in Kolkata. Articles collected include mosquito nets, blankets, biscuits, slippers, tarpaulin, toiletries etc.

@ Sponsor a Project : Kalyan Ashram also has several schemes for those desirous of sponsoring a project.

  • One hostel for vanvasi students - Rs. 1,50,000 yearly.
  • One Motorcycle (used by our full time karyakartas in vanvasi regions for speedy contact and fast work) - Rs. 50,000 one time.
  • One Primary Education Centre - Rs. 31,000 yearly.
  • Expense for roofing sheet for a Prayer / Community / Worship Centre in the North-East - Rs. 25,000 yearly.
  • Adopt a full time kayrakarta ( annual expense of a karyakarta in vanvasi regions who has given up his life for Kalyan Ashram ) - Rs. 15,000 yearly.
  • One Medical Centre - Rs. 10,000 yearly.
  • One Shishu Shiksha Kendra - Rs. 7,500 yearly.
  • Five Samskar Centre i.e. sports, child welfare, moral education & shraddha jagran kendra -Rs. 5,000 yearly.
  • Adopt a Hostel Student ( annual expenses of a hostel student ) - Rs. 5,000 yearly.
  • Any other donation in kind is also welcome.
  • All donations made are exempt under Section 80G of Income Tax Act.

@ MEDICINES : Kalyan Ashram also collects medicines from desirous donors. These are distributed in Medical Camps and also in various other related projects.

TRIPS/CAMPS :

@ Education and Medical Camps : One can attend our education camps and medical camps which are conducted at regular intervals . Through these camps one can come in direct touch with the vanvasi and get a chance to serve the vanvasi, share thoughts with him and make a change in the society.
@ Vanjeevan / Vanyatra : These are trips organised by Kalyan Ashram to the actual tribal areas where its projetcs are situated. These trips give the urban people a chance to meet the vanvasi, experiance rural life and see the working of Kalyan Ashram's projects.
Vanyatras are organised for senior karyakartas and usually last for 3-4 days. Vanjeevan, a week long summer camp is for school going students and is usually organised during summer holidays.

@ Other cities :
Kalyan Ashram has it branches in almost all major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Udaipur, Bangalore, Guwahati, Silchar etc. So people from all over India can work for Kalyan Ashram by contacting the branches in their cities. Projects: Education

(i) Hostels (boys - 166, girls-36)- छात्त्रावास :
The vanvasis mostly reside in villages far away from main stream society where education facilities are not available. Very often the nearest school for the vanvasi children is as far as 15-20 Kms. away. Commuting such long distances is not possible and also discourages them from attending classes on a regular basis.

To address this problem Purvanchal Kalyan Ashram has constructed hostels for school going children near schools in rural areas . On an average each hostel accommodates 25-30 children. These are children from financially weak backgrounds or those who stay far away from schools. Kalyan ashram bears all their expenses including - boarding, fooding, lodging, schooling etc. There are separate hostels for boys and girls and the children are usually admitted when they have reached classes 5 or 6 and stay till they complete their schools. A strict routine is followed which includes shakha, exercises, studies, games, worship etc. These hostels play a vital role in grooming the vanvasi children and bringing out their hidden talents.

(ii) Primary school (162); (iii) Middle & High school (40) :
These schools are established by Purvanchal Kalyan Ashram and have classes up to high school. Apart from providing education they also help develop cultural and ethical values among the vanvasi children. There are 162 primary schools and 40 middle and high schools all over India.

(iv) Ekal Vidyalay (1393) :
As the name suggests these are basic education centres managed by a 'single teacher' hence the name - Ekal Vidyalay . These vidyalays are established in remote villages where education hasn't reached. There are a total of 1393 Ekal vidyalays including 422 in Jharkhand.

(v) Bal Sanskar Kendra ( Informal education centers, 884) :
These 'kendras' are established to inculcate religious, spiritual and cultural virtues among young vanvasi children. Local young women who have passed at least 8th standard are selected, trained and then deputed. Two hour's teaching includes cleanliness, prayer, mantra chanting, songs and poems, story telling, sports, basic knowledge and language learning.

There are 882 such kendras (as on June-2008) all over India including 2 in Andaman.

(vi) Night Schools (232) :
We all are aware of the fact that most of the vanvasis and their children depend upon agriculture for their living. They often leave for the fields early morning and it is not possible for the children to attend morning or day schools. Keeping this in mind Kalyan Ashram is running night schools so that the vanvasi children can attend school as well as work on their fields. There are 232 night schools all over India of which 228 are functioning in Orissa.

(vii) Free coaching classes (57) :

(viii) Library & Reading rooms (43) :
kalyan Ashram has established libraries and reading rooms to help the vanvasis develop reading as a hobby. Reading keeps them updated with the rest of the world and also improve their proficiency in English. There are 43 libraries and reading rooms all over India.
